Why Won’t My Child Nap At Kindy?

For any parent, it can be concerning to learn that your little one isn’t sleeping well at kindy.

At Haven Early Learning, we understand the importance of sleep for your child’s development… and for you! We know a tired child is often a cranky one. Our teachers are committed to providing the best care for your child and have a ton of experience in getting restless kids to rest well.

For more information on how you can assist your child’s napping, check out this guide on How To Help Your Child Sleep Well At Kindy. However, it is also useful to identify why they’re refusing to snooze, particularly if they do nap well at home.

So, what are the possibilities?

Too Much Stimulation

Kindy is a big transition and the change of environment can have an impact on their sleep. With more people, lights, toys and sounds, many kids have problems winding down.

These added factors could mean your child is just too excited to be able to relax or they could be overwhelmed by the unfamiliarity of the environment. If they are used to sleeping alone in a dark, quiet room, the added stimulation of the kindy classroom can play a big part in keeping them awake.

Structured Nap Times

Children who have highly structured sleep schedules at home often have trouble adjusting their routines to accommodate the differences at daycare. Babies and children love consistency and a shift in nap-time timing could be enough to throw them out completely!

Temperament

Your child’s temperament can also play a part in their ability to nap at kindy. Some kids are great with dealing with change and are quick to adapt to new schedules, people and settings.

Of course, this isn’t always the case. Many children find the transition from home to kindy particularly difficult and are slower to adapt. If this is the case, there is no cause for concern – your child will just need a bit more time to warm up to the change.

Whatever the cause, the team at Haven Early Learning are here to help. If you have any concerns or questions, about sleep or otherwise, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
